To Boycott or Not

Today I read this at 5 Minutes for Mom
“‘Tropic Thunder’ will open in movie theaters tomorrow and the ignorant hate word “retard” will be repetitively blared over sound systems throughout the country. While movie goers laugh and spill overpriced popcorn, the cause of establishing equality for persons of all abilities will fall with those kernels and be stomped underfoot and forgotten on sticky theater floors.”

There was a similar post yesterday at 5 Minutes for Special Needs.

As the mother of a child who is actually missing part of her brain, I don’t know what I think.  I’ve been thinking about it a lot, though.  What are your thoughts?

Hear me when I say I am not verbalizing support for or against boycotting this movie.  That is a personal decision.  I haven’t seen it, obviously (it doesn’t open until tomorrow) so I cannot comment on the context, actual validity of said claims, etc.  It is food for thought, eh? I guess in the world of WWJD we could count on the fact He wouldn’t use the word “retard” to describe His creation.  Hmmm.

Watch out Britney

Oops, I did it again!!!!

Actually there is no “oops” to it! It was well calculated, perfectly executed. . and I only ticked off an entire line of people, each holding only one item in their hands – hey, I let one go ahead of me and then ten more showed up. What am I supposed to do? Wait till closing to check out? It’s a 24 hour store, for Pete’s sake.

The guy behind me was really miffed. He exhaled really loudly a couple times to let me know how ridiculous I was, then the coupons started being scanned and his facial expression went from angst to admiration. Thank you very much “I need a smoke and you’re holding me up” man.

So here is tonight’s stash:

A couple questions may immediately come to the mind of the more observant.
1. Why the hearing aid batteries?? They are usually $9 and I only paid $3. It’s fun to get these for my daddy.
2. Why all the Bic pens?? They were ALL FREE. So they are going onto the storage shelf until needed – pens DO run out, you know.
3. Who is the birthday card for?? So many August birthdays. . . Allison, MO, Honey, or my sister. It isn’t for a family member. Hmmm.
4. How good was the deal???

Glad you asked! The receipt total came to $137.44 folks!
Now, the Walgreens advertised savings came to $44.08 – that means I saved $44 just for shopping this week instead of last week or next week. NIIIICE.
Then there’s the Walgreens coupons, they saved me another $5.60.
And lastly, because I paid $1 for the Sunday paper, I saved another $50.50 – that’s a grand total of $100.18 for you folks without a calculator – – and I am going to get another $2 back in a rebate.

The other big event of the night was ticking off a lady in the paper goods section. Seems I got the last three Kleenex boxes and she was not happy. Seems she had already come-a-lookin‘ and didn’t see these three boxes on the shelf. She said a couple ugly things and stormed off to see if there were more in the back. The way I see it, “Finders keepers, losers weepers;” and “All is fair in love and Walgreens.” So, if I see her again, “I will taunt her a second time.” (name that film?)

Enough. I’m going to go google fun craft ideas that use construction paper. . .

Well Worth the Chewing

If you remember the Twizzler deal from long ago:

Well, it was worth looking ridiculous in the Walgreen’s line; worth giving away bag after bag; worth the chewing and chewing. . . because THIS came in the mail this week:
That’s right – $17 spent on Twizzlers and $34 worth of movie tickets!!
And the beautiful part (as if 50% savings and snacks to boot is not enough) is that they aren’t coupons that can only be used once the movie has been out for weeks and weeks.  They have an $8.50 value that can be used on opening night even.  I am saving two for “The Accidental Husband” and two for the new James Bond movie in November! Yipee!!!
