Camp Luthinlighter – 4 and 5

Thursday we looked at the parable of the lost sheep.  The kids all sat and listened to Regan tell the story and watched as she moved the figures she had around the field of green felt.  After listening nicely and only “correcting” her once (thanks, KB), the kids each had an opportunity to retell the story and move the sheep and shepherd.  For a little craft, of sorts, we took thing cuts of a paper towel roll and wrapped white yarn around and around it until it became our own little version of sheep.  Then each child took a turn hiding the sheep and the group would play “shepherd” and look until we found the lost sheep.  Good times.  There were sheep cupcakes for snack.

Friday was a weird day because the Luthin half of Luthinlighter was to close on their house that morning AND we had to grocery shop and cook food to feed 30 that night.  We planned for me to do the shopping while Regan bought a house and then meet at the Luthin’s after lunch for camp.  God had other plans.  I did the shopping, the bank dropped the ball with the closing (a story for another time) and we ended up cooking while the kids played on the slip-n-slide with Mr. Billy.  Day Five was living out “Man makes his plans but the Lord directs his steps.”.

Overall I would say Camp Luthinlighter was a success and loved having another mom/friend to hold me accountable to work my plan.  I LOVE coming up with the plan but, as I have said many many times, my follow through is not so great.  KB asked this past Sunday when we were going to have Camp Luthinlighter again and so I guess the kiddos had fun too.

Camp Luthinlighter – 3

“God Protects His People”  This was the point we attempted to convey on Wednesday.  In the van we discussed the story of the Fiery Furnace (completely unplanned but Regan was on a roll so we went with it) and then at the zoo we headed toward the LIONS to discuss God’d protection of Daniel in the lion’s den.  God was so very good to us – this was the last day of sane weather in town for more than 10 days and it was the day we planned to be at the zoo.  Thank you, Jesus.

Of course we checked out other animals along the way to the lion’s den. . .

There were two baby lions, a mommy lion, and daddy lion.  Usually it is so hard to see the king of the jungle, but this day he was out in full view.  (I think he looks like Aslan on the stone table.)

Regan gathered everyone around and assigned parts for acting out the story.

Bubba was Daniel and, as the story goes, he was dragged before King Darius because he wouldn’t stop praying to the one true God.

I think it was all pretty effective.  On the way to the monkey house we stopped for a little knoll rolling and game playing in the shade.

The day was cut short by repetitive disobedience and the obvious need for an extended quiet time.  I think this is the day KB actually fell asleep during room time.  My kids were extra exhausted because every afternoon they had been going to swimming lessons too!

I am SO VERY thankful for these classes.  The kiddos had a blast and, if I had it to do over again, I would have had them in class for the whole month of June.

The classes we attended were taught through Swim America and high school swim team members were instructors.  The ratio was 2:1 and the kids had a blast while feeling that they had really gained a couple skills over the course of the four days.

And suddenly the week was more than halfway over!!

Camp Luthinlighter – 2

**I need to make sure you notice that our actual week of camp looks VERY little like the plan I laid out a couple posts ago! Who would have ever guessed I would be so flexible!

The second day of camp was spent at The Blue Hutch homestead and we discussed how God Provides for His People. We went across the street to the GREAT park there and started on a walk. As we walked Regan began telling the story of the Israelites leaving Egypt and how the Lord led them with a cloud of smoke in the day and a pillar of fire at night.

NL leads the pack with his red noodle “pillar of fire”.

As we walked we began to complain and grumble about wanting to go back to Egypt where we had food, etc. My kids were mesmerized by Mrs. Regan’s animated telling of history.

Moses (Bubba) prayed and asked God to provide food for us and when we looked up there was manna (popcorn) “covering” the ground.

Everyone was instructed just to get enough for that day and we set out again. Mrs. Regan picked up extra for her family “just in case” God didn’t do what He said He would do, but it rotted in her pocket, smelled awful, and had worms in it. (THIS was everyone’s favorite part!) When we discovered her nasty food we prayed that God would provide again and lo, and behold there was mannacorn all over the ground one more time. And, yes, they ate it.

After the story we headed home and had a scavenger hunt out in the yard. Everyone did a super job being creative and finding everything on their list. We ended our afternoon with “Wandering in the Desert Dessert” on the front porch.

Check out this face!! Looks like the pudding was a hit!!!
