Mother’s Day Week – Friday

Before your kids start school Mother’s Day is kinda eh.  I mean they aren’t old enough to get that it’s a deal and of course one’s husband is lovely but you aren’t HIS mom, you know? Well, once the kids are in school Mother’s Day becomes a marathon.  Seriously.  Last week I looked at the calendar and realized I had four Mother’s Day Teas in six days.

My camera battery died Friday morning and so I went to Bubba’s class tea empty handed.  Thankfully it’s 2011 and we live in the land of the iPhone so another mother took our picture and immediately emailed it to my account.  It didn’t come through so I’ll have to call and follow that up and post it later (for the book’s sake).

That same day Bubba came home to discuss a little decorating with me.  You see, when my mom was here in January she gave a nugget of good advice.  She suggested I minimize the decorating I do around the house for each holiday and just have two or three things I change out for the celebration.  It really has been wonderful and simple and the kids have gotten into it.  A wreath on the door, a wall hanging by the photo collages, and a framed print by our family tree.

This picture shows what I put in after Easter.  It’s just a spring ditty that was a free download. . . somewhere. Bubba came home on Friday and this followed. . .

“Mom.  We need to put up a Mother’s Day picture in the frame.”
“Oh, Bubba, I don’t have a Mother’s Day picture.  It’s okay.”
He disappeared into his room and a minute later came out with this and leaned it up against the wall under the other frames.

“Now we have a Mother’s Day sign, Mom.  Don’t erase it.  I made it.”
“Why would I erase that, Bubba? It is the most special thing you could have given me.”

It’s still there.  It makes my heart go soft.  I like that kid.

Appreciation

Bubba’s imagination is blossoming.  It is fun to watch .  Earlier this week he was building Tanagrams with Funshine.  It’s more fun with a friend – I can appreciate that.

KB got new heels in her Easter basket.  She has mastered scooting around the house in them and wears them with any and every outfit.  It’s nice to see a toy to put so much use – I appreciate that.

Teachers are people in our world that are definitely appreciated.  Therapists in our world are equally celebrated.  This week was Teacher Appreciation Week and so each teacher and therapist received a little bag like this one:

With a tag like this:

And inside was a sticky note holder like this:

I truly appreciate people who share their super and easy ideas online.
AND I appreciate YOU for reading this post to the end.

The Box

Our first two kids have never been into boxes.  Maybe they licked the edges or chewed the cardboard (when they were itty bitty) but they haven’t ever ridden in them like race car drivers or turned them upright and cut doors into them.
I tried to help.  I even got a book from the library called Not a Box, by Antoinette Portis in the hopes that they would catch on and their imaginations would be sparked.  It was a no-go – or Not a Success, by The Blue Hutch.
For almost a year we have been signed up for a “subscribe and save” deal with Amazon.  Three months ago I switched the order from two boxes of Underjams per month to three boxes per month.  (Yes, KB and Bubba are completely potty trained now and I INCREASED our Underjams order.)  With the increased order, Amazon switched from sending the boxes independently to shipping them to us in one big box.  So, if you followed through all that you will have arrived at the understanding that we have been receiving one huge box every month for the past three months.  The April box arrived last week.
If you noticed, I only mentioned our older two children in the first sentence of this post.  The reason should be obvious to anyone who has been with us here at the Blue Hutch for more than a week: KB has enough imagination for all three of our children.  I opened that box in the middle of KB’s room and this is what I found.

The next day I came into the den after lunch to find KB had decided to finish The Cat in the Hat this way:

What Antoinette and I couldn’t do as a team, she did single-handedly.  She had her siblings dancing in and out of those boxes; one even had a door cut into it.  KB has such fun in these boxes that even Anna Pushman couldn’t resist playing along when she came for dinner last week!

I’m already looking forward to our next box arriving!!!
