Hooked on Phonics Worked For Me!

Remember that commercial? If you are too young to remember that commercial . . . I don’t want to know.

Anyway, a friend of mine taught her daughter to read using this system and I’ve been curious. Bubba is obsessed with letters, knows all their names and sounds, and is just chomping at the bit to read. I think his ability to read would really help communication issues and so we bought the Hooked On Phonics Learn to Read program for Kindergarten and 1st grade. (I will not tell you the AMAZING deal I got on it – sometimes I feel I come across a bit cheap.)

So, we started this past week and shot through the first six “lessons” in two days. They were basically review for him – names of letters and sounds. The beauty of the program is that there is music and rhyming, which really helps Bubba process.

By yesterday afternoon he had read his first “story” and his mother went looney bin crazy! I called Memom and he read to her over the phone. I called my sister. I called Honey at work (but couldn’t get a hold of him). I called my daddy (couldn’t get him either). I was EXCITED.

When Honey got home, Bubs read to him and I got it on video. Here’s a little piece of happiness for your Wednesday night:

That’s awesome! Our Transitional Kindergarten (older 4’s) class at preschool uses Hooked on Phonics and I’ve heard great things about it.

I love that KB is twirling next to J as he is listening to Bubba. KB reminds me of our cats when they want our attention they act the same way. Yes, I know this post was about Bubba but in all the video footages you have shared it is hilarious to watch KB in the background of them!
