Deceptively Delicious – really!

I have heard about this book by Mrs. Seinfeld. I ignored this book because I honestly didn’t think there was any way to sneak veggies into EASY recipes and have my kids actually enjoy them. And it was written by a woman who looks 18 and my pride just couldn’t believe that the book wasn’t fake – something published BECAUSE she is Mrs. Seinfeld.

I am a sinner – sue me.

I came face to face with my sin this week when I went to a playdate at my new friend Natalie’s house. The kids and I all trooped over on Monday and when we entered the house Natalie was finishing up some muffins from Deceptively Delicious. I saw the food processor full of pureed carrots – the jar of apple sauce – and my first thought was, “Oh Great.”

Natalie said, “I don’t cook but these recipes are so easy. I thought I would try to have something healthy for us to snack on.” My second thought, “Oh Great.”

Little ate TWO muffins (that’s the most carrot she has had in her system since she began to chew solid foods). Bubba wouldn’t stop playing long enough to eat anything. Natalie had TWO muffins. I had TWO MUFFINS!!!! My third thought, “THESE ARE GREAT!!!” I looked through the cookbook and the recipes looked – quick and easy. “This is GREAT.”

My Catholic friend would tell me that this post is penance. I like to think that this is public confession and an example of God’s grace. See, Bargain Brianna is giving away a copy of this book and I have the freedom to enter to win. I am not limited because of my snarky ways.

You can enter too! Now you are thinking, “GREAT!!!”

First Day of Preschool 2008

My little boy started preschool today – bright and early! “He is just a baby,” was all I could think as I took him into his classroom and turned to go. He hasn’t even turned three yet! Still, he was so ready. He went straight to a toy and began reading his letters and never looked back. The teacher reported that he did a great job – even initiated two sentences (both dealing with snack time). He said four or five things to me this afternoon too (that’s new).

Little went back to preschool today. She was teary-eyed as I walked her to her room. But as soon as we walked in and she saw her friends, things changed. Amy said, “It’s Little!” and Little replied, “I will give you hugs now” and walked over to hug her “long lost” friends. They went off together and she never looked back.

I read an article today about a lady taking her daughter to college and how she has been preparing her for that since she was two days old. How she is thankful for her readiness. How she sat in her daughter’s empty room and cried for an hour after returning home.

There is something about the fact that both my children walked away and didn’t need to look back that is sad and something very satisfying. I want them to grow to be independent. There is something equally WONDERFUL about the fact that each RAN to me when I went to pick them up! Both gave me big hugs. Little even said, “Let’s go find Bubba.” See, I want them to be independent AND I want them to value family. Maybe today is a sign of a good start.
